In a latest Twitter Q&A, Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, has indicated that electric car enthusiasts in India will have to wait a little longer for their dream vehicle.
When an twitter user from India asked Musk on his plans to launch Tesla cars in India, Musk replied that according to his knowledge a major fraction of the automobile parts has to be sourced from the country itself and thus he was skeptical whether it would be possible or not.
It was just a couple of months back when Musk put forth company’s plan to launch Tesla’s products in India in the current year. But his latest tweet has more or less blown away the hopes of people who eagerly awaited Tesla’s electric vehicles launch. However the Indian officials don’t go with Musk’s view on policies in the domestic market. According to Sugato Sen, the deputy director general, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, in the Indian automobile industry policies, there is no compulsion as such for the manufacturers to locally source the parts.
Earlier, India does have made an offer to Tesla to launch its production units in India for which the minister of road transport, Nitin Gadkari has shown his readiness to provide land to the company near port so that it can export its production. Despite the efforts of our government in attracting Tesla to footstep in India, the company hasn’t yet shown interest in accepting the proposal. The company has also been offered privileges that come under Make in India.
A lot many factors will have to play role in creating a successful market for the electric manufacturers. One of the most important factors is the e-charging stations on Indian roads. This has however created an opportunity for young entrepreneurs to step into the domain in making the segment robust by improving the infrastructure through effective ventures which can make future of electric cars in India bright.
