Australia get first female Prime minister

Julia Gillard, former Minister for Education, the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations and the Minister for Social Inclusion and also deputy Prime Minister from Labor Party, since 2007 became the first female Prime Minister after she defeated Kevin Rudd in a partyroom leadership challenge.

Kevin Rudd leader of Labor party since December 2006, told media on 23 June that Julia challenged him on, resign or hold a leadership ballot on 24June.

Kevin resigned from the Labor Party leadership right before the ballot meeting held, because he stand no chance on against Gillard. Hence, Julia Gillard won unopposed as the 27th Prime Minister of Australia and 1st female Prime Minister in Australia’s history on early 24 June.

Kevin Rudd said in media conference after he stepped down “I have given it my absolute all and in that spirit I am proud of the achievements we have delivered to make this country fairer.”
