Boat overturns in Ganga killing atleast 43
At least 43 people were drowned after an overcrowded boat with 60 passengers capsized in Ganga at Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. Bodies of all the 43 people have been recovered. Authorities near the accident site say, the death toll is likely to climb up.
The passengers, belonging to four families were reportedly participating in a religious ritual when the boat over turned. Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati promised Rs 1 lakh compensation to the kin of all those drowned in the mishap.
Boat accidents are common in India, mainly cause of overcrowding, poor maintenance of vessels and a lack of life jackets and other safety equipment.
